Wispy Beret
I’ve recently made several hats, including a beret with beautiful yarn from a local handspinner. It’s 100% alpaca, and amazingly soft. Alpaca is a unique fiber — I often find that it is cool to the touch, is incredibly smooth, and wears just as warm as wool. It’s my fiber of choice. If you ask me, it’s even better than cashmere.
Did you know that most cashmere is mass-produced in China? Cashmere-producing goats are also extremely destructive to the land. They have destroyed much of the land they graze in Mongolia. (So think twice before buying that $50 cashmere sweater — you get what you pay for.)
I crocheted this beautiful handspun yarn alongside a strand of mohair to give it a fuzzy halo. I’m interested in the way the camel color appears radially in the beret, because a crochet stitch is horizontal. When I knitted with this yarn, the camel color appeared in vertical strips. Something to consider when working with hand-dyed yarn!

This is gorgeous. I’ve never used Alpaca—but I definitely have an urge now.
