In yesterday's Type class...
…we went around the room sharing photos of our projects — the project being to create four characters in any physical medium of our choice.
We got to P—, who shaped her letters with her hands. G—, the professor, was very impressed and said, “two thumbs up,” to which I replied, “was that a pun?” We all laughed because she didn’t mean it that way.

Progress Report
I am at “Sof-,” with only a “t” left to complete. I’m thinking of creating a ligature between the “f” and “t” —- any thoughts on this?
In the background you can see the beautiful Indonesian ikat blanket I bought in Panama!

A family member of mine that works there has kept me informed on the project. I can send down the pieces I didn’t finish in time for the Smithsonian reef! More on how to help here.

So, I’ll be working on my Type assignment whilst indulging in some television watching. Any suggestions for shows on Hulu or Netflix?

Bags that need finishing.
Raise your hand if you struggle with installing zippers as much as I do! My goal is to finish these this month.
The Printemps Bag is crocheted from wool, and the flowers are made from a variety of cottons. The pink flower is made from the Irish Rose pattern, the daisy is from my No-sew Daisy pattern, and the last flower I improvised. I’m thinking of using wool felt to make rolled...

I got the highest grade on the first project in Typography, so my professor called me out in front of the class and gave me a gift card to Olive Garden.
She also made a disclaimer about the fact that “Gift Card” was in Papyrus. (This goes back to the time I didn’t want to go into a restaurant because the sign was in Papyrus. I told her about this, and she said, “I think...

Alpacas and wools and cottons!
Lampshade wrapped in yarn, dangled in felt balls. The yarn was sold by weight, and you can see the scale in the corner. Buying yarn by the gram was a frustrating, but intriguing, challenge. I had to compare everything to sock yarn quantities — sock yarns usually come in 100...

H. was laughing at me the other night because we got in his car and I immediately started knitting. He said it was pure junkie behavior and I need an intervention. But I thought he said “knittervention,” which just proved his point.

Knitting and Typography are a lot alike.
Before you learned about it, you may not have noticed it much. But once it is in your head, its presence is awakened in everything: you will find yourself admiring it in magazines, films, passersby, and you can’t stop yourself. Instead of paying attention to the plot, you’re pondering the use of Copperplate Gothic in the opening credits. And who cares about that character being shot,...

Knitting + Typography
My latest project in Typography class is to create an alternative alphabet using any crafty technique I want! I think I will knit some plushie members of the alphabet — I’d be crazy not to, right?
I’m going to need a lot of yarn for this, so I’m skipping the selection at my LYS and opting for Lion Brand Organic Cotton. I considered buying one of those 1-lb skeins to save...

I was scootering from class today, and went over one of many familiar bumps on the road home. But after hitting this bump, I felt something tugging at the bag hanging between my feet. I looked down to see a length of yarn extending from the bag to the road. Oh no! The hat I was working on flew out and was now bouncing beside my scooter at 35 mph!
Thinking fast, I used my left hand to pull up the...

I'm in the Halloween spirit.
I scored a spinning wheel for $10 at a yard sale. The wheel seems to have all parts in order, and I’m very proud of myself for figuring it out! I haven’t found any great tutorials on the internet, so I may take a class on spinning.
I have roving left over from thrumming projects, and made a few yards of crazy, overspun yarn. It seemed perfect for an Autumn decoration.
