It's finished!
I still don’t think I am crocheting correctly. I let my intuition lead because I haven’t found any tutorials that tell you what to do once you get to the second row. The texture of the fabric looks different from other pieces I’ve seen and I feel like I have carpal tunnel syndrome, so this makes me think I’ve gone wrong somewhere. It looks pretty good though, no?

Hyperbolic crochet.
I’ve been working on a hyperbolic crochet form to contribute to the Smithsonian satellite reef. I’m happy to finally have a use for one of the first yarns I bought — Lion Brand Fishermen’s Wool. I have it in plain, unbleached white that isn’t as exciting as my other yarns, and thus it has sat for months completely ignored. Although it is humble in appearance, it is...

More toy knitting.
I haven’t knitted a toy in a while, which is something I really enjoy. My six-year-old brother has requested a toy train with the words “BULLET TRAIN” on it. I’ll make it in his favorite colors, black and red, and the words will be knitted with the intarsia method. Since I’m knitting in the round, one word will be knitted backwards and the other will be knitted upside...

Me: Love you, Phillip!
6 yr old brother: Hate you, Daphne!
Me (laughing): Why do you hate me?
6 yr old brother: 'Cause you're a KNITTER!

What are you making?
I just crocheted and knitted several America-themed pot holders, completed my modified version of Yo-El’s Mermaid Shawl, made one sock with KA Indulgence (may or may not make the second one), and finished a pair of mittens. I’m out of projects! What to start next?

Last Google search: "how to make granny"
I have tried to learn to crochet a few times using sources on the internet, and while I understand the different kinds of stitches, the tutorials I’ve found for making granny squares leave too much to infer. This is discouraging, and since I already knit I haven’t been too motivated to persevere in my challenge to crochet. Well, I was flipping through the Amazing America issue of...

"Knitting Pattern" is slang. →
I’ve heard this phrase used in Coupling, and I had to find the meaning! In one episode the ladies are discussing Jane’s new interest: Jane: He moved in across the street about a month ago. Gorgeous! Susan: How gorgeous? Sally: Knitting pattern? Jane: Better than knitting pattern. Season 3 Episode 6: The Girl With One Heart According to Urban Dictionary, the reliable source for...

Graphic designer Haik Avanian and his mom are taking orders: you send in an old sweater, and his mom reknits it into a cool winter accessory! The team is also considering accepting extra “moms.” A great way to spread the spirit of knitting and upcycling! Read more here. Avanian comes from a family of upcyclers: look at how this yarn was reused by his family across generations! ...

Other times I see knit couture and think, “how on Earth is it possible to make that??!” I see how they made that: Courtesy of Chanel How on Earth is it possible to make that??! : This is an open cable knit sweater. Do your part for Earth: Choose your font wisely!
thebrassknuckles: Tom Wriggelsworth and Matt Robinson drew out large scale type specimens of commonly used fonts to measure the ink usage of each.  The remaining ink in the tubes was used for visualization of the usage - Garamond came in 1st place for the font to use the least amount of ink.  Good. Now maybe businesses will stop using Times New Roman and upgrade to Garamond. Toner is...

More on my Ikat love.
Gucci likes it too. Imitation Ikat: Photo courtesy of Saks Fifth Avenue Photo courtesy of Elle There was a loom set up for Ikat weaving at the Textile Museum, and I got to take a closer look at the incredibly detailed process. The warp and weft yarns are resist-dyed with the images before they are woven, which creates the stunning linear blur. I was lucky enough to happen upon an Indonesian...

Uncommon winter accessories that work:
The cowl. Does the job without those extraneous dangling parts. The muff. Hung from the neck, it’s always where you want it and it’s easy to get in and out of. The balaclava. Warms your entire head, not just the top of it. I’m starting my winter knitting with these projects.
